Kakamega National Reserve

Kakamega Forest National Reserve is the only tropical rainforest in Kenya and the last remnant of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once spanned the continent.it is located in Western Kenya near the border with Uganda. The reserve covers 44.7 sq. Km. This beautiful forest is home to various mammals including bush pigs, giant forest hedgehogs, Colobus monkeys, Debrazza monkeys and pottos. Some of the 300 birds species to be seen here include the Blue Headed Bee Eater, Black Billed Turaco, Turner’s Eremomela and Grey Parrots.400 butterfly species up for spotting not forgetting 27 different species of snakes. Bird watching, hiking and camping among other activities can be enjoyed here in the serenity of the forest that time forgot.  

Activities in Kakamega national reserve

  • Hiking-There are several self-guided trails that you can follow without a guide, and it is quite a liberating experience to set off into the jungle on your own.  However, a knowledgeable guide can make all the difference between a pleasant jungle hike and a fascinating experience that you will never forget. During your hike be on lookout for 150 species of trees, 170 shrubs, 60 species of Orchid (9 of which are only found here).  See if you can identify the following: Elgon Teak, Red and White Stinkwood, Crotons and Ferns – 60 different species   
  • Camping-If you enjoy camping, there is no better place than Kakamega Forest Reserve to get really close to nature, without worrying about big hairy animals lurking outside your tent.  Fall asleep to the sounds of the forest and be right on-site for a brilliant sun-rise walk to the sound of the dawn chorus of birds.
  • Guided Walks-There are several guides who know the forest like the back of their hands and will greatly contribute to your enjoyment of this unique environment.  Most guided walks take around 2 hours, and will introduce you to the fascinating small animals and the stunning forest vegetation. 
  • Wildlife Watching -Kakamega Forest is home to many small animals including Bush Pig, Duikers, Bushbuck, Dik-dik, African Clawless Otter, Mongoose, Tree Pangolins, among others but the most delightful to observe are the playful primates which include Debrazza Monkey, Blue Monkey, Black-and White Colobus Monkey, Sykes Monkey, Red-tailed Monkey, Olive Baboon and Potto they are shy that why appear and disappear as if by magic.  There are seven different species of snakes to look out for, if you can tear your eyes away from the multitude of birds and the unique rainforest flora.  Wherever you turn titillating flashes of color will alert you to the presence of yet another beautiful orchid, a brilliant bird or an amazing butterfly.
  • Photography- you need to record all this forest bounty to remind you of your jungle adventure.  There will be great photographic opportunities around every corner, so it would be wise to bring your camera.

Where to Stay at Kakamega Forest National Reserve-accommodation

If you would like to stay in the heart of the forest, you can choose between camping at one of the two campsites; Udo Campsite & Biota Campsite, renting a KWS self-catering Banda (cottage) or staying at one of the guesthouses; Isukuti Guest House, Udo Guest House and Udo Traditional Huts. All these options are inexpensive and they do give you the opportunity to enjoy night and dawn excursions in the forest. If you prefer something a little more comfortable, then Rondo Retreat and Golf Hotel, Kakamega Town is a possibility.
